The New Orleans Drawing Project

May 2006 / March 2007

For my first trip to post-Katrina New Orleans in May of 2006, I knew I wanted to work large to represent the scale of the disastaer, and in the street to hear the stories of residents. At first when I arrived I wandered, looking for a scene that captured my attention. It soon became evident that this whole approach of looking for an ideal composition was obsolete in the face of such devastation. This occurred to me while driving through the Lower Ninth Ward, and I just pulled over and started drawing. Most of the images from these trips were done in a four block radius with no preparatory sketches.
